The Integration Police Inspector Ulf Boström from Gothenburg slams the Pakistani government in front of the eyes of millions of Ahmadi Muslims.
He was invited as a speaker at the largest Muslim convention, Jalsa Salana, in London, and after the speech the Gothenburg Police Inspector was praised both on site and in social media.
When Ulf Boström was asked whether he was willing to speak at Jalsa Salana in London, an annual convention that is followed by millions Ahmadi Muslims, he never hesitated.
"I saw this as part of my job as a police officer, it was natural for me to say yes," he says.
During his ten years serving as Integration Police, Ulf Boström has visited all the different religious places in Gothenburg and his empathy for Ahmadi Muslims is very strong.
"I've come close to them and come to understand their vulnerability. They are persecuted, injured and killed in their native Pakistan. There it is illegal for them to call themselves Muslims, call their mosques as mosques and to pray openly - they can be punished for three years' imprisonment and a fine. It is inhuman," says Ulf Boström.
Compared with hate crime
Pakistan's treatment of Ahmadi Muslims was also the theme of Boström. He compared the legislation to hate crimes, and said that it is contrary to international law and UN conventions.
- Pakistan is member of the United Nations - and we are forced to accept their citizens as they are persecuted in their home country. Some religiously convinced Pakistanis think they have the right to hurt, kill and persecute these people and that the state provides the incentive that says it's okay, says Boström.
"Many were impressed"
After his speech, Ulf Boström received much praise in social media. Amer Munir Chaudhry, spokesperson for Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Sweden, thinks he knows why.
"Many were impressed that he as an individual Swede dared to criticize the Pakistani government and not back away from these issues. There were many who thought it was a bold move," he says.
Ulf Boström says that he was met by many smiles, hugs and handshakes after the speech at the convention.
"Think about if the xenophobic could direct their anger against Pakistan's [version of] democracy and the way they manage their people instead of against the poor people who come here because they have to. What would happen then? We would become a country of knowledge," says Ulf Boström.
