European Organization of Pakistani Minorities records the following human rights violations in Pakistan during the single month of July 2014:
At least 3 Shia Muslims were shot dead when terrorists of Ahl-e-Sunnat-wal-Jammat attacked on them on Eid ul Fitr day in Pakistan. Two Shias were killed in Quetta and another was murdered in Karachi. Two Shia men Zakir Hussain and Syed Jawad, residents of Alamdar Road were attacked at Sabzal Road, Quetta. They died on the spot.
Another Shia Muslim Ahsan Manzoor was attacked and killed in Malir, Karachi.

Three members of the Ahmadi community and an unborn child were killed and four others were severely injured when an angry mob attacked Ahmadi homes and burnt five houses belonging to members of the Ahmadi community over alleged blasphemy. Those who died in the attack include a 55-year-old woman, Bashiran, a minor girl, Kainat and 7-year-old girl Hira. A seven-month pregnant woman, identified as Mubashira, had a miscarriage because of the incident. According to details, the clash started when an Ahmadi youth, Saqib, 17, s/o Ahmad Din, allegedly shared a so called blasphemous picture with Ejaz on Facebook. Ejaz along with Zakariya s/o Imam Jama Masjid Sadiqia Qari Muhammad Hakim and others gathered outside Saqib’s house to protest, following which the angry mob attacked and damaged seven to eight houses belonging to members of the Ahmadi community in protest and set five houses on fire in Arafat Colony, Gujranwala. Following the violence, all Ahmadi families in the area fled in fear for their lives. Six houses and a shop were damaged in the incident. Majority of the male members of the Ahmadi community have still not returned to their homes fearing another unwarranted attack.

Mian Manzoor Ahmad, along with his 12-year-old son Kamran, had returned from Saudi Arabia a few months ago and had permanently settled in the Imamia Colony. His wife had died two years ago and he had hired a maid, Umaira Bibi, to look after his son. The police claimed that the three victims had fallen unconscious after eating their meal, probably due to some intoxicant mixed in the food. All three unconcious victims were then shot dead by unidentified persons. The suspects fled after locking the house from outside. Neighbours alerted the Gojra city police when they noticed a foul odour emanating from the house. District Police Officer Dr Shahzad Asif visited the house and supervised the investigations.
Karachi: Christian family faces execution if deported back to Pakistan, 26 July, 2014
A family had fled Pakistan to Thailand due to persecution over their Christian beliefs. Now Sarfraz Sagar and his wife Shazia, along with their children Roni, Naiha, Rijeka and Roshni, face the threat of being deported back to Pakistan where they could be executed on some concocted charges. The death threat hanging over the heads of the Sagar family cannot be overstated since it was for the very same reason that they had fled Pakistan in the first place. The Christian man Sarfraz was targeted in Pakistan for his efforts in helping his fellow Christians who had lost their homes and businesses when Islamic radicals burned down Christian churches, business and homes in 2012.” The family went into hiding when Muslim radicals intensified Christian persecution in the country in 2013. With the help of others, Sarfraz was able to escape to Thailand and the rest of his family eventually joined him in the place of relative safety, one by one. The family has applied for asylum with the United Nations, but it is a lengthy process. The family is not allowed to work and the children cannot attend school until they have been in the nation for two years. The visas of Sarfraz, his wife Shazia and their son Roni are soon to expire and without a visa, they will be deported back to Pakistan where they face certain death.
Due to intense persecution, thousands of Christians have fled Pakistan in search of countries where they will be able
to safely practice their faith. The Sagar family, who fled to Thailand could face death if they are deported back to Pakistan,
an experience not uncommon for thousands of fleeing Pakistani Christians.
Tando Bago police have registered a criminal case against four men belonging to the Ahmadi community for allegedly preaching their faith. Mohammad Ramazan Rustmani, a local cleric, who is also an office-bearer of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (Fazl), lodged an FIR (96/2014) against the four men, Abbas Gurgez, Idrees Gurgez, Mushtaque Ahmed Gurgez and Mohammad Khan Gurgez, under Sections 298-B (misuse of epithets, descriptions and titles, etc., reserved for certain holy personages or places) and 298-C (person of Quadiani group, etc., calling himself a Muslim or preaching or propagating his faith) of the Pakistan Penal Code. Tando Bago SHO Khuda Bux Panhwar told media persons that the FIR had been registered on the insistence of local religious leaders and added that raids were being carried to arrest the nominated men but they had fled from the village to avoid arrest.

As the Islamic holy month of Ramadan is underway, Pakistan has been enforcing even non-Muslims to comply with its restrictions on eating, drinking, and smoking. It is a common sight to see laborers being hauled into jail for a mere drink of water during the extremely hot months of June and July, thus depriving a poor man of his basic human rights in sheer violation of the constitution of the democratic country. A Pakistani Christian journalist observes that, “no article of Pakistan’s constitution empowers the state to force people to pray, fast or live according to the injunctions of the Islamic Law". The Islamic Republic of Pakistan, is a sovereign country in South Asia with a population exceeding 180 million people. It is the second most populous Muslim majority country in the world. Religious minorities make up around 5% of the total population and Pakistan has the second largest Shia population in the world. After Islam, Christianity and Hinduism are the largest religious minorities in the country. Yet all minorities in Pakistan live in a constant state of utter fear, not knowing what the next day will bring as even simple, every day activities like reading, writing, speaking, even picking up a piece of paper may be perceived as blasphemy in a blood thirsty land.

Takfiri terrorists opened fire upon the motorcade of Quds Day rally on Shahrah-e-Faisal in Karachi leaving 3 women and a youth injured. The injured were Shia residents of Mehmoodabad. As per tradition, Shia Muslims including children, women, youth and elderly persons came out of their houses to join the main International Quds Day rally following the call of Imam Khomeini and Imam Khamenei. The motorcade was attacked near Fine House on main Shahrah-e-Faisal. The injured women were identified as Sheher Bano, Kaneez Fatima and Hameeda and the injured young man was identified as Iqbal.

Sharifabad police said Tariq Khan, 26, was busy at work with his customers in his shop in the F.C. Area in Gol Market near Hussaini Imambargah when gunmen on a motorcycle had targeted the unarmed Shia victim for their unprovoked attack. He was taken to the ASH, where he was pronounced dead. The police said that the victim originally hailed from Punjab and they were not sure if the incident was prompted by sectarianism. However, a spokesperson for the Majlis-i-Wahdat-i-Muslimeen said that Tariq was a Shia and it was a sectarian killing.

A Shia Security guard was killed and 2 others injured in another armed attack on a cash van in Karachi. According to the police, the incident took place in Jahangirabad near Rizvia Society where four armed robbers on two motorbikes, suspected to be takfiri terrorists, intercepted a cash van belonging to a private security company. Officials said that the gunmen had fired on the van in an attempt to stop it but the robbery attempt was thwarted by return fire from the van's security guards. One of the guards, Hasnain Abbas, received bullets in his abdomen and died on the spot. A brief crossfire between the guards and the bandits left two passersby injured.
A Shia tailor, master Ghulam Sakhi, was shot dead in Manghopir area of Karachi, when terrorists belonging to the banned Sipah-e-Sahaba attacked his shop.

A senior lawyer who was also the son-in-law of a prominent Shia scholar, Allama Talib Jauhari, was killed in a “sectarian” attack in Karachi. 60-year-old Syed Mubarak Raza Kazmi was shot dead by four men riding two motorcycles in 13/B, Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Kazmi was returning from the City Courts to his residence in Block 18 of Federal B Area. A police official said that Kazmi always used the same route to return home and had stopped at a shop to buy fruit when he was attacked. A senior official of the East zone said that the killing was definitely sectarian in nature. Kazmi’s body was taken to Jinnah hospital for autopsy.

Armed men attacked a Shia family travelling in a car on Liaquatabad Flyover near Karimabad Furniture Market, killing a woman and injuring her husband and son. The police said that 40-year-old Huma, her husband Bilal Ahmed and teenage son Hasnain, residents of Nazimabad No 2, were returning home after visiting their relatives in Gulshan-e-Maymar when armed assailants fired gunshots at their vehicle. The police believe that the attack was motivated by sectarianism and that the actual target was the husband. Condemning the two attacks, the Shia Ulema Council demanded that the interior minister should visit Karachi and directly take steps to bring Shia killings in the city to a stop. “The police and other law enforcement agencies have completely failed to protect the lives of members of the Shia community,” said Shia Ulema Council President Jaffer Subhani at a press conference held at the Karachi Press Club. Subhani said that the governor, the chief minister and IGP had assured the Shia ulema that target killings in Karachi would be curbed but no results have been visible so far. Subhani said that he did not support using the army to restore law and order in Karachi and police could do it on their own if some improvements were introduced in the department. “There is lack of coordination between the police and Rangers. They are not working on a single agenda,” he added.

Peshawar: Shia jewellery store owner shot dead, 17 July, 2014
As per police reports, unidentified gunmen killed a man belonging to the Shia community in Mohalla Kashmiri in Yakatoot locality. A police official of Agha Mir Jani Police Station said that two unidentified gunmen shot dead Sabahuddin, son of Allauddin, when he was on his way home from his jewellery shop. Relatives of the deceased man told media persons that Sabahuddin had been lying injured on the spot for about one and a half hours after the attack before the police reached the scene of the crime. Thereby, the Shia victim could not be shifted to hospital on time for life saving measures to be undertaken.
Karachi: An uneasy coexistence: Christians & Muslims in Karachi's Michael Town, 16 July, 2014
The irony could not be more cruel. The well-known symbol of a kite accompanying the slogan “aqliyati umoor” (minority affairs) is emblazoned on the walls of Michael Town, but its small Christian community, a little over 2,000 people, is reminded every day of how little their lives, their property, their very right to exist, are worth to the political forces that control Karachi. It was never easy for them in this low-income locality in Korangi, where most of the 300 houses with Christian residents are located in eight narrow, adjacent lanes. Poverty and prejudice combined to keep them on the margins of Pakistani society. While the Muslims got water in the pipelines, their enclave did not, so they had to buy water from tankers. The Christian residents, unlike the Muslims, could not hold religious gatherings in the communal ground, out of fear of causing offence to the residents of the imposing madressah overlooking the site. Shops owned by the Christians were not patronised by the Muslims. “We’ve always lived separate lives,” said Naseem Gul, 22, who belongs to the minority faith.

A shopkeeper was shot dead and his two friends were wounded in an attack apparently on sectarian grounds in Sharifabad. The police said that Adeel Abbas, 30, was sitting in his general store in Federal B Area with his two friends when four assailants riding two motorcycles opened fire on them and rode away. Abbas died on the spot while his friends, Shahzad and Mansoor, were shifted to a private hospital on Stadium Road for treatment. The police said that all 3 victims were Shias. A spokesperson for the Majlis-i-Wahdat-i-Muslimeen said that the victim was a local officer-bearer of their organisation in F.B Area and it was a targeted attack.
Gujranala: Muslim man beats up Christian servant, detains his Christian brother's wife & minor children, 16 July, 2014
A Muslim man beat up his Christian servant and also detained the man's Christian brother's wife and minor children for hours in Kotli Malian Tetley village. Tetley police registered a case against Chaudhry Shabbir Ahmad and his accomplices under Section 342 (Punishment for wrongful confinement) and 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of Shahzad Masih. Shahzad said that initially the police did not take any action but when Christians in the area protested, the police rescued Shahzad Masih's sister-in-law and children from Shabbir’s custody. Later, priest Sharif Alam met City Police Officer Raja Rifat Mukhtar and informed him about the situation. After the meeting, Tetley police registered a case against Shabbir.

Three Pakistani Shia judges of the Lahore High Court have received death threats from a banned sectarian organisation prompting the government to enhance their security, revealed a senior Punjab police officer. “Law enforcement agencies suspect that the anti-Shia organisation, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, is behind the threats to Justice Ali Baqar Najfi, Justice Muzahir Ali Naqvi and Justice Mazhar Iqbal. Additional police personnel have been deployed at the court’s entry and exit points and outside the courtrooms. Elite Force commandos have also been deployed for the security of the three judges,” the official added. According to the Lahore police, top Shia professionals face threats to their lives daily. Three eminent Shia figures, an eye surgeon, a chartered accountant and a lawyer, were recently killed in Lahore.
Nawabshah: Ahmadi man murdered in Nawabshah, 14 July, 2014
An Ahmadi man was murdered in Nawabshah, a town 170 miles northeast of the Pakistani port city of Karachi in Sindh province. The victim, 38-year-old Imtiaz Ahmad, a local Ahmadiyya Muslim youth leader, was standing in front of the business he owned in Trunk Bazar when he was shot in the head. Although the cause of Imtiaz Ahmad’s murder has not been formally determined, the victim’s family has endured faith-based murders in the past. The victim’s uncle, Seth Muhamad Yousaf was gunned down in Nawabshah because of his faith a day after the airing of a TV episode 'Aalim Online', on which an infamous hate preacher had facilitated issuance of a fatwa calling for the murder of Ahmadis because they were 'apostates' of Islam. Ahmad is survived by his elderly parents, wife and three children. The youngest child is only a few month old.

Islamabad: 14,000 Pakistani Christians fled Pakistan in 2013, 12 July, 2014
According to a latest report sent to Fides by a Pakistani NGO, World Vision in Progress, about 14,000 Pakistani Christians have sought asylum in foreign countries. The World Vision in Progress clarified that as a result of increasing terrorism, insecurity and harsh living conditions for religious minorities in Pakistan, people belonging to minority communities in Pakistan are abandoning the country and are seeking refuge elsewhere. In the past year for instance about 14,000 Pakistani Christians have sought asylum in Asian countries as well as in Western countries such as Europe, Canada and America. Farrukh H. Saif, Executive Director of the World Vision in Progress stated: The situation is serious; Minorities, especially Christians and Hindus are being targeted for acts of terrorism, mass violence and abuse of the 'blasphemy law'. Because of this situation, an increasing number of families are choosing to leave Pakistan. Thousands of Pakistani Hindus seek refuge in India, while Christians, Ahmadis, Shias and other religious groups have reached East Asia and South Asia and have registered with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), hoping to be able to settle in a country where they can enjoy equal rights. The flight of the Pakistani Christians began in 2009, when Christian neighborhoods and villages in Punjab were attacked by Muslim extremists. Hundreds of homes were burned and hundreds of Christians from Gojra and Korian took refuge in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Hong Kong and Malaysia. Moreover, in March 2013, Islamic fanatics attacked ‘Joseph Colony’, a Christian area in Lahore. According to our investigations, last year 14,000 Pakistani Christians sought asylum in countries of East Asia and South Asia.

Two Shia Muslims were shot dead in a pro-Taliban Takfiri Terrorist attack in Abbaotabad area of Khyber Pakhtonkhwa Province of Pakistan. Pro-Taliban terrorists of the banned Sipah-e-Sahaba (SSP) renamed Ahl-e-Sunnat-Wal-Jamaat, mounted an attack on a prominent member of the Shia community, Syed Mustafa Sherazi, a retired Army official, and his son Syed Wasim Sherazi in Abbotabad, killing them both on the spot. Mustafa Sherzai was a regional Shia cleric.
Islamabad: ATC grants bail to main accused in Christian Federal Minister Shahbaz Bhatti's murder case, 11 July, 2014
The main accused, Umer Abdullah, arrested in the murder case of Shahbaz Bhatti; former Federal Minister for Minorities Affairs in the Government of Pakistan, gets bail from Anti-Terrorist Court (ATC), here today. Shahbaz Bhatti, a Christian Federal Minister for Minorities Affairs, was gunned down in the capital city of Islamabad on March 2, 2011, when he was on his way to a Cabinet meeting. The killers sprayed 28 bullets on him after stopping his car. They then dropped pamphlets on his dead body which stated that this was 'the punishment for a blasphemer' by Tehreek Talban Punjab TTP. The pamphlets also warned that whoever will speak against blasphemy laws in Pakistan, his fate will be death. Shahbaz Bhatti was demanding amendment in the blasphemy laws of Pakistan which were targeting religious minorities in Pakistan to settle personal scores. The ATC Judge Atiqur Rehman, who had reserved decision on the bail application of the main accused, Umer Abdullah, granted bail on the submission of one million rupees surety bonds today, even though the accused man Umer Abdullah had confessed to the murder of Shahbaz Bhatti before the Islamabad police. Umer Abdullah had been arrested by the police and intelligence agencies from a private hospital on the accusation of him having links with Al-Qaeda. The bail to the self-confessed killer of Shahbaz Bhatti has spread a wave of fear and insecurity among millions of Christians in Pakistan.

Shia activist Muhamamd Asif Karbalai s/o Akber Ali, aged 42, was shot and killed in a pro-Taliban Takfiri Terrorist attack near Impress Market area of Sadar in Karachi. The Shia victim was an active worker of Jafferia Alliance. According to reports, the murdered man had been targeted on 22 January 2012, in a prior attack on his life at Lasbella Chowrangi area of Karachi, on the way to the central procession taken out on the martyrdom of the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) and Imam Hassan (as) in M.A.Jinnah Road, Karachi. He had escaped the first assassination attempt with minor injuries but fell foul to the second attempt on his life.
Islamabad: Deobandi seminary forcing female students to ‘jihad’ against their will, 8 July, 2014
Relatives of a female student at a Deobandi seminary, Jamia Hafsa in Islamabad, have complained against the seminary for forcing girl students into jihad against the will of their parents. The brother of a 26 year old female student had gone to Jamia Hafsa to foil the seminary management's bid to send his sister to ‘jihad’ but the seminary’s administration tortured him severely. Islamabad police arrived to help but the seminary's administration told them that they would only produce the student in the court of law. Shaikh Abdul Qayoom, the father of the girl student, told reporters that he had become worried when his daughter told him that her coffin was ready and she was to go to jihad. Hence, he had lodged a complaint against the Jamia Hafsa. The police has also registered the complaint made by the student’s brother accusing the Deobandi seminary staff of torturing him.

Members of the Hindu community staging protest rallies and demonstrations for more than a week over harassment of Hindus living in the Kali Mata temple compound in Latifabad, by political activists, took out another rally for the protection of their lives and their properties. Residents of a huge compound within the Kali Mata Shiva Mandli temple claimed that a group of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) activists along with the ‘land mafia’ were bent upon acquiring a piece of the temple land measuring 20,000 square yards for commercial purposes. They said that the temple compound had a settlement of several thousand Hindu families living there for decades. They accused that PPP activists and their associates had been firing into the air almost daily to harass and terrify the poor Hindu residents living in the compound. They said that the activists and builders had been issuing death threats to them to force them out of the settlement and grab the land meant for the establishment of a dispensary. The protesters raised slogans against those involved in the harassment and urged the PPP central leadership to rein in its errant activists. They said that the affected people belonging to the Meghwar caste had approached the police several times but the latter were reluctant to take action because of the political clout enjoyed by the activists.
A rally was taken out by protesting Pakistani Hindus from SP Chowk. After marching throughseveral streets and roads, the participants converged at the local press club where they staged a demonstration and a sit-in protesting against threats made by PPP activists and land grabbers in a bid to usurp temple property in which several thousand Hindu families were residing. A number of activists belonging to various nationalist parties also joined in the protest.
Unknown men shot dead a Hindu trader, said personnel of Levies Force. Bhagwan Das, a trader and member of the Hindu Panchayat Committee, was in his shop when assailants opened fire on him, grieviously injuring him. They fled after the attack. Khuzdar Levies Force registered a case against unknown accused and investigations are under progress.
Karachi: Shia youth murdered in Takfiri terrorist attack, 1 July, 2014
Extremist militants of Sipah-e-Sahaba shot martyred a Shia youth in Karachi’s district central on Monday, first day of the sacred Islamic month of Ramadan. Syed Mazhar Naqvi son of Syed Ghulam Naqvi, 30, was made target by the notorious militants of Sipah-e-Sahaba near Al-Haaj Restaurant in Surjani’s area of KDA Flats. Due to targeted firing, Mazhar Naqvi embraced martyrdom. His body was taken to a government hospital for autopsy.
