LAHORE: Dr. Syed Waseem Akhtar, Member of the Punjab Assembly, staged a walkout for what he termed ‘facilitation’ of the Ahmadiyya community by the Excise and Taxation Department.
During the question hour, the member asked how many organisations had been exempted from property tax on the premise of being welfare organisations.
The department said 95 welfare organisations had been exempted from property tax over the last five years.
For Dr. Akhtar the case of Ahmadiyya community stood out as unacceptable. He said no facilitation of any sort should be provided to an organisation belonging to the Ahmadiyya community.
Mian Muhammad Munir, Parliamentary Secretary for Excise and Taxation, responded the department took decisions in line with the law, and not on the basis of anyone’s religion and faith.
Dr. Akhtar then staged a walkout in protest. Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal requested another member to bring Akhtar back. He also referred the matter to the standing committee concerned.
Dr. Akhtar represents district PP-271 (Bahawalpur-V) and aligns himself with Jama'at-e Islami, an extremist religio-political party, where he serves as their Provincial President.
A medical doctor by training, Dr. Akhtar was first elected to the Punjab assembly in 1990. According to the Punjab Assembly website Dr. Akhtar claims to follow Islam.
